It is required by IMO regulations to have a separate rudder angle indication system for each steering position and at the emergency steering position. A rudder indicator can be mounted on the steering wheel, or on a panel with different dimensions, scales, and protection grades. It can have a pointer that swings 30 degrees with each revolution of the wheel, or a tri-colour display that indicates the port and starboard directions of travel. A rudder indicator can help with safety and manoeuvring in close situations. It does not require cables, adjustments, or electricity.
